So, I always seem to have 100 things on my mind at once. And a new business idea bounces into my head ever few seconds. I use to drive my husband insane with consistent change of direction, but he is kind of use to it now.

Welcome to my most recent idea. The Family Day Care.

How this came about

After I had Dominic, I had no idea what I was going to do. I was forced to quit my job since I feel pregnant 3 weeks before I started my new role (making me ineligible for maternity leave by the time I gave birth). Boy was I angry. After 2.5 years of service with the company in a contractor role and then officially transferring into a permanent role, signing a new contract meant the past 2.5 years were not acknowledged. Fine, policies are policies but that’s corporate for you. No recognition or loyalty to employees, but yet they expect loyalty in return? And you wonder why the Gen Y doesn’t give a crap about climbing the corporate ladder like the generations before them.

What it meant to me and why I did it

Anyway, being jobless with a new family and recent mortgage was extremely stressful. It’s not like I can’t find a new job. I’ve never had problems with that. But this was the tipping point for me. I had worked 60 hour weeks for the past 5 years in corporate companies growing my career, yes climbing the corporate ladder, but when it comes down to it. They don’t give a shit. A few handshakes, awards, 2% increases with small bonuses to make it look like the appreciate you but what they are really asking for is, WORK HARDER and we will keep appreciating you with meaningless gestures.

Of course, not everyone sees the above as meaningless. But I don’t care about my financial rewards or hand made certificates. I want a company to be there for me when it really counts. Like a relationship. You do things for the people you care about because you know that they would always be there to help you through. But for employers, when push comes to shove they only care about what you can do for them.

I think that’s why working in a small business is better sometimes. They can’t pay you what a large corporate company could, but they can make those decisions and ignore policies. That’s why I’m starting up my own business.

So what now?

As a new mum, struggling to find trusted and flexible care, I found out about Family Day Cares. Massive career change after being a Marketing Manager for so long, but I’m taking the challenge.

It might take a while before I start making money. So on weekends I’m running market food stalls to try get some extra cash. I need to learn about the industry too, so I’ve secure a job as a Marketing Manager at a local childcare centre.

New Journey here I come. Good byeeeeee corporate life.
